KCCNA Presidential Candidates Speak: Stephen Mattathil

Dear Knanaya Catholic Community Members of North America,

Stephen Joseph Mattathil
mattathil3@yahoo.com
I am writing this letter to announce my candidacy for the upcoming KCCNA presidential elections. I am extremely grateful and humbled to have the opportunity to run for this position. This important decision was not made lightly. KCCNA is a crucial umbrella organization that scrutinizes the smooth functioning of its individual units. The great sacrifices and challenges that our previous leaders have faced and courageously overcome throughout their time in office are beyond impressive. However, there still linger major challenges that impede the growth of our community. I sincerely believe that my mission & vision is a gateway that can propel KCCNA and our Knanaya family to progress forward with new direction and vigor. I am delighted to state that in my life journey, I took credible steps to foster the spirit of the Knanaya Community and Christian faith. I started my Community Service as an altar boy at St. Stephen’s Church, Uzhavoor. Later with few others, I became the machinery to initiate the organizations of Knanaya Associations in Mumbai, Kenya and Kuwait. The history repeated in San Antonio too when I moved in the year 2006. My vision as a KCCNA Presidential candidate includes the following:

1. Participatory leadership style to be introduced from the national to the unit level. This would enable all Knanaya people in North America and Canada to participate in the national election and main decision processes.

2. I will do my best to foster Catholic Faith and protect Knanaya Tradition in our community in North America. This would be my first target because a clear solution on this issue alone is a start to bring peace to the community.

3. Active youth involvement in the major decision-making processes of our community is an eminent agenda. The future of the community lies in the hands of our youth & so special programs would be designed from unit level to get them involved into the mainstream affairs of the community.

4. Every successfully progressing organization requires a head quarter as its foundational infrastructure. My mission includes establishment ofsuch a KCCNA headquarter with a permanently serving Secretary General that can facilitate our community’s prosperity. This office should be the prime source to provide solutions to all Knanaya issues to its entire members in North America.

5.As a father of three young adults, I am convinced that the new generation of Knanaya children are free thinkers. Their ideologies are based on evidence, literature, research and reason. And so in order to successfully pass on the torch of our tradition, it is vital that we make available to them the resources that define our culture& rich traditions. A creative idea would be to dedicate a room in the KCCNA Head Quarters as aKnanaya Bhavan (or library) that houses numerous official KCCNA documents as well as copies of Knanaya traditional literature in paper/ electronic formats that can be easily accessed by all Knanaya members, especially our youth.

6. And lastly, I do not believe in the ‘Panel system’ at KCCNA election. This is because such a Panel system complicates the election by dragging in unnecessary politics and drowns the main objective of the election which is to find the most eligible and capable candidate for each post. My take on this matter is thateligible members for each position should individuallyannounce their candidacies & campaign for it. After the election, the winning officials should work together as a team to serve our community.

It is with this image that I declare my candidacy and I request your invaluable support and cooperation to turn this vision into a reality.
