കാനാ കുടുംബാംഗങ്ങള്‍ അമേരിക്കന്‍ ക്നാനായ പള്ളികളിലെ അംഗങ്ങളാണോ?

ഈയടുത്ത ദിവസങ്ങളില്‍ ക്നാനായ വിശേഷങ്ങളില്‍ വന്ന വിശകലനത്തില്‍ ഇങ്ങനെ പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.

“സമുദായത്തിന് വെളിയില്‍ നിന്നും വിവാഹം ചെയ്ത ക്നാനായ സമുദായാംഗമായ സ്ത്രീയ്ക്കും പുരുഷനും സീറോ മലബാര്‍ ഇടവക സ്വാഗതമരുളുമെങ്കിലും, അവര്‍ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന പക്ഷം സ്വന്തം ഇടവകയില്‍/മിഷനുകളില്‍ അംഗങ്ങളായി തുടരാന്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക് സാധിക്കും. അവരുടെ ജീവിതപങ്കാളിയും കുട്ടികളും ക്നാനായ ഇടവകയിലെ അംഗങ്ങളായിരിക്കും.”

ഇതിനെ പലരും ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യുകയുണ്ടായി. ഇംഗ്ലീഷില്‍ കൊടുത്തിരുന്ന ഇടയലേഖനത്തില്‍ ഇങ്ങനെ (പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ചുവന്ന നിറത്തില്‍ കൊടുത്തിരിക്കുന്ന വാചകം) ഇല്ല എന്നാണു പലരും പറഞ്ഞത്. ഈ പറഞ്ഞവര്‍ ബുദ്ധിയില്ലാത്തവരോ, ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഭാഷാപരിജ്ഞാനം ഇല്ലാത്തവരോ അല്ല. അവര്‍ക്ക് അങ്ങിനെ തോന്നിയത് തികച്ചും ന്യായീകരിക്കാവുന്ന കാരണങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ടാണ്.

ഇക്കാര്യത്തില്‍ ആദ്യമേ പറയട്ടെ, പ്രസ്തുത ഇടയലേഖനം വിശ്വാസി സമൂഹത്തെ മനഃപൂര്‍വം തെറ്റിദ്ധരിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ വേണ്ട മുന്കരുതലുകളോടെ തയ്യാറാക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നതാണ്. ലേഖനം അങ്ങാടിയത്ത് പിതാവിന്റെയാണെങ്കിലും അതിന്റെ പിന്നിലെ “ക്നാനായബുദ്ധി” വളരെ പ്രകടമാണ്. ഈ ഇടയലേഖനത്തിന്റെ ശരിയായ അര്‍ഥം മനസ്സിലാകണമെങ്കില്‍ അതിന്റെ വരികള്‍ക്ക് ഇടയിലൂടെ (Between the Lines) തന്നെ വായിക്കണം.

Congregation for Oriental Churches in Rome-ല്‍ നിന്നും ലഭിച്ച ഉത്തരവിനെ (റെസ്ക്രിപ്റ്റ്‌) സ്മരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടും അംഗീകരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുമാണ് ഇടയലേഖനം ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. അങ്ങാടിയത്ത് പിതാവ് അംഗീകരിക്കുന്ന റെസ്ക്രിപ്റ്റില്‍ പറയുന്നു:

Those Knanaya Catholics who married non-Knanaya spouses enjoy equal status in the ministry.  These Congregation does not accept that the customary practice followed in Kerala, of excluding from the community those who marry non-Knanaya spouses, is extensible to the United States of America.

സ്വവംശവിവാഹനിഷ്ഠ പാലിച്ച ഒരാള്‍ക്കും, അത് ലംഘിച്ച ഒരാള്‍ക്കും ക്നാനായപള്ളിയില്‍ തുല്യ സ്റ്റാറ്റസ് ആണെന്ന്. ക്നാനയാസമുദായത്തില്‍ നിന്നുതന്നെ വിവാഹം ചെയ്ത ഒരാളുടെ ഭാര്യയും മക്കളും പള്ളിയിലെ അംഗങ്ങളാകുന്നതുപോലെ, മാറികെട്ടിയവരുടെ ഭാര്യയും മക്കളും അതേ പള്ളിയിലെ അംഗങ്ങളാണ് എന്ന് ഇതില്‍ നിന്നും പകല്‍പോലെ വ്യക്തമാണല്ലോ.

അങ്ങാടിയത്ത്‌ പിതാവ്‌ 2003 ഡിസംബര്‍ 19ന് സിറിയക്‌ പറത്തറ എന്നയാള്‍ക്ക് എഴുതിയ കത്തില്‍ വളച്ചുകെട്ടൊന്നും ഇല്ലാതെ ഇങ്ങനെ പറയുന്നു:

“Knanaya Catholic Missions are recognized as missions of this St. Thomas Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago based on “Instructions” I have received from the Congregation for Oriental Churches in Rome.  Knanaya Missions are for all Knanaya Catholics.  But no Knanaya mission in this diocese is strictly endogamous.  Knanaya Catholics who get married to non-Knanaya spouses will continue in their Knanaya Missions along with their Spouse and children.”

ഇതുകൊണ്ടൊന്നും കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ വ്യക്തമാകുന്നില്ലെങ്കില്‍, ഷിക്കാഗോ സീറോമലബാര്‍ രൂപതയുടെ Procedure Rules (Section II: The Pothuyogam [Parish Assembly] of the Mission/Paris, Clause 5.6) നമുക്കൊന്ന് നോക്കാം.

“Representatives of families – Ordinarily the  husband and wife shall represent the family in the Parish Assembly.  However, in the absence of parents, the eldest person in the family above 21 years of age shall represent the family.  Single individual above 21 years of age who is registered in the mission/parish independently can attend the Parish Assembly.  However, a person is eligible to participate in the Parish Assembly only after three months of registration in the mission/parish.”

ഇത്ര സുതാര്യമായ നടപടിക്രമങ്ങള്‍ ഉള്ള ഒരു രൂപതയുടെ കീഴിലുള്ള പള്ളിയില്‍ ഭര്‍ത്താവ് അംഗവും, ഭാര്യയും മക്കളും അംഗങ്ങള്‍ അല്ലാത്തവരും ആണെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കുവാന്‍ ആര്‍ക്കെങ്കിലും സാധിക്കുന്നുവെങ്കില്‍, അവര്‍ക്ക് നന്മകള്‍ നേരുന്നു!

ഇതിനോടൊപ്പം “SO NO PARISH/MISSION IS STRICTLY ENDOGAMOUS “ എന്ന വാചകവും “Family unity and spiritual well-being are our primary concerns” എന്ന ഇടയലേഖനത്തിലെ അവസാന വാചകവും ചേര്‍ത്ത് വായിക്കുക. എല്ലാം വ്യക്തമാകും.

Rescript (Congregation for Oriental Churches in Rome):

Allow me to refer you to your kind letters of October 9 and December 5 last, informing this Conregation of the purpose of Special Ministry for the Knanaya Catholic Community in the Archdiocese of Chicago and requesting pertinent directives.

This Congregation has carefully studied this delicate issue and has also undertaken a consultation; and it is now in a position to communicate its considered view together with a few points for your guidance.

First of all, I must once more express, on behalf of the Congregation, all our appreciation of your concern for the suitable pastoral care of these Oriental Rite communities settled in your Archdiocese, especially in providing for a special ministry already in 1983 and in inaugurating a new ministry in August of 1985.

It is understood that there are now in the Chicago area some two hundred families of Knanaya lineage and that these are divided over the norms of membership in the proposed ministry: a substantial number insisting that this ministry must include those also who have married non-Knanaya spouses; and others, who are desirous of retaining the practice followed in Kerala of excluding those who marry non-Knanaya spouses.  These latter have assured that they will loyally comply with whatever decision is made in this regard.

This Congregation, all things considered, and for serious pastoral reasons, hereby signifies its full accord with Your Eminence’s pastoral proposal, notably, that the special ministry for the Knanaya community can be faithfully conducted only on the basis that those Knanaya Catholics who married non-Knanaya spouses enjoy equal status in the ministry.  These Congregation does not accept that the customary practice followed in Kerala, of excluding from the community those who marry non-Knanaya spouses, is extensible to the United States of America.
