Dear Knanaya Community Members of North America:
On Behalf of the North American Knanaya Community, KCCNA Executive Committee strongly reject, unanimously, the recent directive from Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiyath regarding the membership within Knanaya Parishes established in the St. Thomas Syro Malabar Diocese of Chicago.
The community in North America and our spiritual leadership in Kottayam have rejected the 1986 rescript multiple times in the past and the current clarification given on the membership within the Parishes are against the community’s traditions and immemorial customs which has been practiced for more than 1700 years and accepted by the Catholic Church in the past, when the Knanaya Diocese was established in 1911. The North American Knanaya community have made it clear multiple times that, community only accepts Parishes/missions with only Knanaya people as members (i.e. those who are born biologically to BOTH Knanaya parents and if they are married, their spouses are also born biologically to BOTH Knanaya Parents).
We are extremely disappointed that during the past 8 years, though community/KCCNA was insisting clarifications since 2004, the truth was hidden from the community members by the diocese and the Knanaya Region, when Community members were asked to establish Knanaya Churches in North America. In the light of latest revelations, we believe that the authorities of Syro-Malabar Diocese and Knanaya Region were less than truthful and were deliberately misleading the community members over the past several years. We believe that Knanaya Region authorities failed in their responsibility to safeguard the ethnic identity of Knanaya parishes/missions in North America within the Syro-Malabar Diocese.
Therefore, we are requesting our fellow community members to reject the directives of the diocesan and Knanaya region authorities and not to cooperate with them until finding a resolution acceptable to community on the membership of Knanaya Parishes. KCCNA is committed to taking necessary steps to ensure the community’s interests are protected going forward.
KCCNA Executive Committee
