The Implications of the New Pastoral Letter – Pious Thomas

This is intended for those who want or support an Endogamous parish/mission.  Those who want to support the current Non endogamous parish/mission may keep doing it.  It is your choice and decision.

We all heard about the latest Circular from Chicago Diocese.  Now it is very clear that Knanaya parishes and missions are non-endogamous.  Most of the people already knew that our missions and parishes are non-endogamous.  For those who were doubtful, the situation is now very clear.  It is clear like the commercial of the Claritin tablet.  When you have cold or allergy things are vague but once you take the Claritin it become very clear.  Here the latest Circular is the Claritin and those who are in doubt, now have clear understanding of the mission/parish membership.

Our priests group is claiming that as of now we do not have any members who are non-kna.  They may be right.  How long they can claim that.  Have to be seen.  As long as they have the order from higher authority, there is always the possibility of admitting non-kna members to the Knanaya missions and parishes.

In addition, they are pointing the fingers to the Rescript.  Rescripts are responses in writing by the Catholic Church authorities to queries or petitions of individuals.  The rescript we are referring to was addressed to the Latin Bishop in 1986.  Rome might not have all the pictures or facts of the Knanaya community at the time they issued the rescript.  Those who welcome the rescript won’t admit that.  They will say Rome don’t make any mistake.

There was no Syro Malabar Rite officially established at that time.  Church authorities also say that this rescript was considered during the erection of Chicago Diocese in 2001 and the subsequent establishment of Knanaya missions.  It is time to boycott the rescript.  In NY our missions were started way before Chicago Diocese by the community loving members.

How are we going to express our protest against non-endogamous missions and parishes?  It depends on each one of us.  If we have a soft corner of going to Malayalam mass every Sunday, it won’t work.  To me, seeing Malayalam mass or English mass at local church is the same and we meet the obligation.  Remember that members of Rockland St. Mary’s Knanaya mission, unanimously agreed for an endogamous mission during the Pothook .  But that has no value in the eyes of the Chicago Diocese.

Let us decide not to support the mission.  Either don’t go to mission activities or go the services and do not support financially.  We should take very strong steps until Church authorities feel the pressure and revisit the so called rescript and Non-endogamous missions and parishes. We may have to sacrifice something to gain something else.  Think about it.

The choice is all yours……

Pious Thomas
