ക്നാനായ സമുദായത്തിന്റെ അനന്യതയും, തനിമയും, സ്വവംശ വിവാഹനിഷ്ടാപാരമ്പര്യവും, “തലമുറ തലമുറ കൈമാറി, കെടാതെ ഞങ്ങള് സൂക്ഷിക്കും” എന്ന് പാടി, അതില് വിശ്വസിച്ചു വളന്നവരാണ് നമ്മള്. ഈ വികാരം നമ്മള്ക്ക് പകര്ന്നുതന്നതില് നമ്മുടെ മാതപിതാക്കള്ക്കും, ബന്ധുക്കള്ക്കും ഒപ്പം പുരോഹിതവര്ഗത്തിനും ഗണ്യമായ പങ്കുണ്ട്.
രണ്ടുമാസം മുമ്പ് വരെ ഇവര് ക്നാനായ സംസക്കാരം കാത്തു സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ ആവശ്യകത നമ്മെയെല്ലാം ബോധ്യപ്പെടുതിക്കൊണ്ടേയിരുന്നു. അതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിട്ടാണല്ലോ, നമ്മളാരും ലത്തീന് പള്ളികളില് പോകരുതെന്നും (ലത്തീന് പള്ളികള് സകല പാപങ്ങളുടെയും തിന്മകളുടെയും ഉറവിടവും വിളനിലവും ആണെന്ന് മുത്തു ഉവാചഃ) ക്നാനയക്കാരന് ക്നാനായപള്ളികളില് അല്ലാതെ കാലു കുത്തരുതെന്നും നമ്മോട് വാതോരാതെ പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നവര് ഇന്ന് ചോദിക്കുന്നു, “ക്നാനയമോ, എന്ത് ക്നാനായം?
അങ്ങാടിയത്ത് പിതാവ് പരസ്യമായും രേഖാമൂലവും പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നതിനു വിരുദ്ധമായി മൂലക്കാട്ട് പിതാവ് പറഞ്ഞിട്ടും അങ്ങാടിയത്ത് പിതാവ് അക്ഷരം മിണ്ടുന്നില്ല. ഇതെല്ലാം മെത്രാന്മാരുടെ ഒരു ഗൂഡാലോചനയായി മാത്രമേ സാധാരണക്കാരന് കാണുവാന് സാധിക്കുന്നുള്ളൂ.
എന്ഡോഗമിയുടെ ഗുണഗണങ്ങള് പാടിപുകഴ്ത്തി നടന്നിരുന്ന ചില ക്നാനായ കപടബുധിജീവികളും, പിന്നെ ചില കൂലി എഴുത്തുകാരും, ഉറക്കം ഉണര്ന്നെഴുനേറ്റപ്പോള് എന്ഡോഗാമി വിരുദ്ധരായി, അതിന്റെ ദോഷ വശങ്ങള് നമ്മെ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. തിരുമേനിമാരുടെ ഇത്തരം ലൌഡ്സ്പീക്കര്മാര്ക്ക് നമ്മള് ചെവി കൊടുക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ടോ?
ബഹു. പിതാവ് LA ല് KCCNA യുമായി നടന്ന മീറ്റീങ്ങില് ഹൂസ്റ്റണിലെ പള്ളിവാങ്ങലിന്റെ പിന്നിലെ ക്രമക്കേടുകള് തെളിവുസഹിതം KCCNA അംഗം വിവരിച്ചപ്പോള് “ഞാന് പറഞ്ഞിട്ടാണ് ഹൂസ്റ്റണില് പള്ളി വാങ്ങിയത്, അതെക്കുറിച്ച് ആരും ഒന്നും ചോദിക്കേണ്ട” എന്ന് ധാര്ഷ്ട്യത്തോടെ പ്രതികരിക്കുകയാണ് ചെയ്തത്.
ഓശാന ഞായറാഴ്ച ചൈതന്യയില് വച്ച് ക്നാനായ സമുദായം മൊത്തമായി പിതാവിനെതിരെ തിരിഞ്ഞിട്ടും, ഇക്കൂട്ടര്ക്ക് ഒരു വീണ്ടുവിചാരം ഉണ്ടാകുന്നില്ല. “Dogs bark, but the caravan moves on” എന്ന മനോഭാവമാണ് തിരുമേനിയ്ക്കും കൂട്ടര്ക്കും.
2007-ല് നടന്ന കോട്ടയം അതിരൂപതയുടെ പാസ്റ്റരല് കൌണ്സിലില് ഈ വിഷയം ചര്ച്ചക്ക് വന്നപ്പോള് കേരളത്തിന് പുറത്തെ ക്നാനായ കത്തോലിക്കരുടെ പ്രശ്നങ്ങള് പഠിക്കാന് പത്തംഗങ്ങളുള്ള ഒരു കമ്മറ്റി വയ്ക്കാം എന്ന് മൂലക്കാട് പിതാവാണ് നിര്ദ്ദേശിച്ചത്. അതിന്പ്രകാരം കൊല്ലാപറമ്പിലച്ചന് ചെയര്മാനും, വടാത്തല തോമസ്കുട്ടി സാര് കന്വീനറുമായി ഒരു കമ്മറ്റി ഈ വിഷയം പഠിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.
ഈ കമ്മറ്റി നല്ലരീതിയില് പ്രശ്നത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് വളരെ ആഴത്തില് പഠിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം പത്തു പ്രധാന നിര്ദേശങ്ങള് മുന്നോട്ടു വച്ചു. സ്വവംശവിവാഹനിഷ്ടയില് അധിഷ്ടിധമായ ഒരു സമൂഹമാണ് ക്നാനായ സമുദായമെന്നും, അതിന്റെ പതിനാറു നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകാലത്തെ ആചാരങ്ങളിലും അനുഷ്ടാനങ്ങളിലും അടിസ്ഥാനതത്ത്വങ്ങളിലും യാതൊരു മാറ്റവും വരുത്തേണ്ട എന്നും, അതിനു ആര്ക്കും അവകാശമില്ലെന്നുമാണ് ഈ പത്തു നിര്ദേശങ്ങളുടെ കാതല്. ഈ റിപ്പോര്ട്ട് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചപ്പോള് എല്ലാവരും കൈയടിച്ചു സ്വീകരിച്ചു. ഈ റിപ്പോര്ട്ടിനെയാണ് നമ്മുടെ പ്രിയങ്കരനായ വികാരി ജനറാള് ഓശാന ഞായറാഴ്ച വളച്ചൊടിച്ചതും, പിതാവ് നിഷ്ക്കരുണം തള്ളിപ്പറഞ്ഞതും.

Alex: You are doing a sincere job to preserve what we have been practicing. However, we need to think of the practicality of the situation outside of Kerala. Unless and until we collectively (hierarchy and laity) work to get our rights (strict endogamy) established in our church environment it is simply a waste of time. In order to get that collective approach, our hierarchy must and should stay in the front. But, they simply cannot do that because they are bound to go by the rules of Rome and, therefore, playing this chess game to fool the laity and probably Rome eventually. So, folks like me have no time to waste on this issue and thus the silence. I am writing this after four plus years of silence. We are indeed in a vicious circle.

Either to get a divorce from Rome or go by the direction of our hierarchy and be a member of that group following the unwritten policy established by the hierarchy of Catholic faith; pay, pray, and obey or shut up. It is unfortunate, but we have to take this nonsense unless we want to walk away from it and be a person our own faith, whatever that be. Most of our folks love peace and harmony and do not want to be succumbed to this nonsense any more… So, that be it!!!
Endogomy is the basic foundation of Knanaya Community. Endogomy has not in any way come on our way to live as catholics. The Catholic Church recognizes and promotes diverse cultures and customs and that is why we have now an Archdiocese. What we need is not the multiplication of our diocese but extending our pastoral ministy to where ever our people are.

We do not need any unbecoming languages or fault finding accusations. Let the clergy and lay faithful work together according to our Knanay spirit of love, respect and fellowship.

Good writing Father Chacko. The damage done to this peace loving community by Fr. Mutholam merely for his personal gain is irrepepairable at this time. To achieve this Fr. Mutholam has to go. No doubt about it, for that the youth - yuvajana vedhi from Chicago has to rise up and then bingo, all will follow suit. I predict his days are numbered.

Once he is put in his right place by calling him back to India, the american knanaya community will be saved from a lot of trouble. Why is he exempted from periodical transfer like others. Is there any hidden reason behind this? He could have been a murky politian instead of being a priest. The american knanaya community has been divided by this over ambitious man unworthy to be a priest. Our bishop should accept the fact that AD 345 is not simply a register number of his car; but it is the foundation stone of a whole community, held in reverence. If he got any self respect left , he should undo immediately what he had done, though I sincerely doubt it, considering his arrogance and disregard to the feelings of the people he leads.

What ministry r u talking about if we don't accept anybody to our churches? Endogamy is a tradition practiced by Jews, Brahmins and certain tribals in Arabia and different parts of the world. But in these communities endogamy always co-exists with Polygamy(more than 1 wfe) and Polyandry(more than 1 husband).Otherwise many people may not get partners. This is a big problem faced by many of our youngsters.If your brother wish to continue in our community and if he doesn't get a spouse from knanaya is it fair to tell him 'go out from our family'? Then what is sacremental in marriage?

But Bible says many people were converted to Jewish Religion (Acts-2.11) If Jews also accept people from other race what a stupidity when we talk racial purity. We must acknoledge our forefathere were converted to Christianity once upon a time and we have to accept anybody to our church, who is willing to follow the Lord and our tradition. We have to emphasis and continue our unity, and strengthend as a community socially, economically, politically and spiritually.Church recognises diverse cultures, accepting everybody, that is why syro Malabar rites continuing the tradition of St. Thomas.
why do we need Syro malabar in the US when Latin churches were accepting us in their churches? Our children will be happy to go to English mass and stay in the faith.

ReplyDeleteIt is a colossal waste of time to argue the validity and merit of the Moolakat formula. The formula does not even have value of the paper it is written on and it will never be implemented in USA. Why? Because Moolakat has no authority over the Knanites in USA and Angadiath has not accepted and will not accept the Moolakat formula.
What we need to focus on the current situation in USA. There is no written membership criterion for the Knanaya parishes now. That means no where it says in writing that only Knanaya people will be members of the so called Knanaya parishes in USA under Chicago Syro-Malabar diocese. If you need to verify this, please go ask your parish priest for a copy of the Articles of Incorporation for the Knanaya church or any other document that clearly states the membership criterion. I bet you won’t find any!
Within 5 years Angadiath will order that Knanaya parishes will need to admit a limited number of Non Knanaya Syro Malabar people as members. Friends, I am not talking about just those who are married to Kannaya people. The church hierarchy will instruct that those Syro Malabar faithful who insists on joining a Knanaya church, because it is close to their home and driving to a non Knanaya church is causing undue hardship for the family, must be admitted. Angadiath will argue that:
1. There are no strictly endogamous parishes in USA.
2. Moolakat has no authority in USA to block such a decision.
3. The Knanaya parish operates with no membership criterion.
Friends, what will you do? Or the question is; what can you do? Nothing! That is because there is no legal basis to fight the Syro-Malabar decision. Some of us who are complacent will live with it and still keep paying for watered down churches. They will console themselves saying “we don’t lose out Knanaya identity by having a few non knanaya members” or “we should practice endogamy at home and association but, not in the church.”
That is why we should direct all our efforts and energy to get the membership criterion added to official church documents. With a sense of urgency, we should also start the petition for suis juris status for Kottayam Knanaya Metropolitan church so that Knanaya people all around the world have one set of rules and we can safeguard our 2500 year old traditions.

A person ,who is born of Knanite parents,loses his/her privileges as other Knanites when he/she marries a non-knanite.He/she will not have the right to hold offices of our church/mission/parish/association and to register to participate in our Knanaya Conventions.

If you look at the Indian cultural situation, Indian people are strict endogamous with respect to their castes. See the Nairs only marry the Nairs, Ezhavas only marry Ezhavas, Syriac Christians only marry Syriac Christians and similarly, the Southists only marry Southists. Even when Syro Malabars are in catholic communion for about 400 years, still SMC-Latin marriages are very rare. This is due to the strong caste feeling in the Indian community. Many communities have practices of out casting the members even today for various reasons, but due to public outcry and legal issues, it is not usually publicised. Those members will not get support from their caste hierarchy; will not get the “desakkuri” for marriage etc.
ReplyDeleteYou have to remember, until 1900 period, Syrian Christians were also proud to say we are a caste- eg. Nidheerickal Mani Kathanaar and Nasrani jathi aikya sangham-(Society for Nasrani caste Unity.). The Arch deacon was the “jathikku karthavyan”- administrator of the caste. So, I am not too surprised about the practice of endogamy which is a reality even today in all communities in Kerala.
Re. very strict endogamous practice among Southist community-
As all know, Southists and Northists among the Syriac Christians of Malabar behaved like two castes. Hence they were two castes with the same religion and hence endogamous within their castes. There are suggestions that Southists were considered a bit inferior to Northists in the past-( ref. Sloane MS 2743 dated AD1676 kept in British Museum, London, Letter sent from Northists of the Vicariat of Changanacherry to Rome against the Southist Bishop Mar Makil) As Southists were a very small community, and there were no other Christian community around, they became strictly endogamous within that small community.
100 years ago, no one in Keralan Society can think about intercaste marriages. In the modern world, after the social renaissance in Kerala especially with teachings of Sri Narayana Guru etc against caste system and its evils and promoting inter caste marriages, things are a little bit improved now, but still I would say, intercaste and inter religious marriages are rare.
Now, it may be the later day attempts of Southists to redefine and justify the reasons for endogamy is creating stories to project them Jewish pure blood and strict rules to out caste the members if they marry from other communities. Projecting superior is a basic instinct of Indians where caste feeling is inborn in their blood. Every group is projecting themselves superior and push the rest as inferior. The best example is the Northist claim of Brahmin origin.
ക്നാനായകാര് വാങ്ങിയ പള്ളി എങ്ങനെ കാനാ കാര്ക്ക് കൊടുത്തിട്ടു പോകും? പള്ളിക്ക് സാമ്പത്തിക സഹായം കിട്ടുന്നിടത്തോളം കാലം മുത്തുവിന്റെയും സീറോയുടെയും കളികള് തുടര്ന്നുകൊണ്ടെയിരിക്കും. അതുകൊണ്ടു എണ്ടോഗമി സംരക്ഷിക്കാന് എന്തുവണമെന്ന് ഓരോരുത്തരും ചിന്തിച്ചു തീരുമാനിക്കുക.
ReplyDeleteThere were some wise people who were all the way predicting that buying churches in USA is a ticking bomb. Until and unless there is clarity on the matter of membership in the so called knanaya churches, we should refrain from buying them. But wise men were silenced or sidelined by muthu and his henchmen, who are out to destroy the very foundation of knaism. History will never forgive these shortsigted and self-serving people.

ReplyDelete1. With out Endogamy there is no Kottayam Diocese.
2. The write up I like it, but the Writer interviewed Retired Supreme Court Justice and you were asking questions about Knanaya Community, and he replied to your question that He hopes to keep every body who married from out side Knanaya Community so that the community won't destroy. I am wring the things I remember, if it is not correct, you can go back to your Interview. I would like to know what is your (Alex Kaniyamparambil) position or role. Are you for Endogamous or nonendogamous Knanaya Community.

Per Chicago Kna, this Mr.John wrote an article long ago that was published by ChicagoKna, said that the email he send was not his. This is a man who changes the way the wind flows. He sometimes wants to please Muthu, otherwise he may loose his kappiyar in Houston. What else do you expect from a man who has no credibility. His credibility has been challenged by Chicago Kna not once, but many times. He might be loosing it. Pl. don't blame him, it must be his age.

ReplyDeleteDon't you still get it. Moolakat's job is to get money, fill his coffers as much as possible by selling you, for which he uses Mutholam.
Though Moolakat's only job is to transfer people who gives problems to him to the hilly areas like Malabar, he will not do what his "Kunjaadukal wants". Keep dreaming.

DeletePeople dream Muthu will be removed because they don't like him. That is not the way Catholic Church functions. The Church does not care a hoot about what laity thinks. And mind it, in the unlikely event of Muthu being removed, only a worse - much worse - priest will come as a substitute. Don't think there is none worse than Muthu in Kottayam warehouse. There are priests who vomited right on the altar.
One thing our people don't realise is that the priests are here not to serve them. They are here as the Collection Agents of Aramanas. Kanjirappally, Pala, Kottayam - they are all same in this respect. And the one who collects maximum amount is the best CA. As things stand now Muthu is the best CA (not Chartered Accountant; Collection Agent).

ReplyDeleteJohn chettan is getting old, give him a break. The tide is against John chettans and muthus. It is like a tsunami, none can stop it. Anytime I call my friends they keep asking when are you all going to close down the missions and send back the priests.
